Oakland Airport has Terminals 1 and 2 joined by a walkway after security. Its BART airport connector station is across from Terminal 1 baggage claim and a short walk from Terminal 2; rail access is a different journey from changing gates.
Where to start
Check the gate on your operating flight before leaving the secure area. The airport says gates in both terminals can be reached from either terminal’s TSA checkpoint through the connecting walkway. If you already hold the onward boarding pass and your bags are handled, follow the gate signs rather than heading out to the BART station. Ask the airline if a bag must be collected or a new check-in is required.
How the movement works
The airport’s parking FAQ states that Terminals 1 and 2 are linked by a post-security walkway and that travelers may enter through either terminal checkpoint to reach a gate. This describes a physical connection, not a promise that every international arrival or separate-ticket itinerary can remain secure. The BART connector is outside the terminals, by Terminal 1 baggage claim, and leads to the Coliseum rail interchange. It isn't the route between airport gates.
| Decision | What the source describes |
|---|---|
| Terminal 1 ↔ Terminal 2 gates | Post-security walkway described by airport |
| BART connector station | Across from Terminal 1 baggage claim; short walk from T2 |
| Coliseum rail interchange | Separate connector trip, not an interterminal train |
Before you rely on this route
If your destination is downtown Oakland or San Francisco, check current BART hours, fare and onward station on the rail operator’s site. The airport’s business FAQ gives an eight-minute connector vehicle trip to Coliseum, excluding the walk, wait and train beyond. If your next flight leaves SFO or SJC, that is a different airport; a BART connection alone doesn't settle baggage, traffic, check-in or security.
Check your operating flight and the airport’s current notice before you go. A short ride or a frequent bus won’t tell you whether you have enough time for the whole connection.
Common questions
Do I need a train to change between OAK terminals?
The airport describes a post-security walkway between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 gates.
Is BART the same as an airport terminal shuttle?
No. The BART connector takes passengers to the rail interchange outside the airport terminal system.
